On April 23 and 24, 2018 the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) coordinates with the Graduate Academy of Social Sciences (GASS) and the Center for Sustainable Urban Development under the Institute for Regional Sustainable Development (IRSD) (under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) organized the second pilot training course “Eco- Industrial Park – Theory and Practice”. This is the next training program of the first one held on April 10 and 11, 2018 in the series of 2 pilot training courses on Eco- Industrial Parks which organized by IRSD and the MPI. The main objective of the training course is to introduce the theoretical framework of the Eco- Industrial Park, the development of the Industrial Park and the orientation to the Eco-Industrial Park in Vietnam.
The training was held successfully with the attendance of Mr. Bui Nguyen Khanh, Deputy Director of the Graduate Academy of Social Sciences (GASS) , Mr. Tran Duy Dong, Director General of Department for Economic Zones Management – MPI, Ms. Tran Thanh Phuong, National Project Manager; Dr. Nguyen Dinh Chuc, Deputy Director of Institute of Regional Sustainable Development ; Mr. Le Xuan Thinh, Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre (VNCPC) and 35 participants are Master students and PhD students of three faculties: Public Policy, Business Studies and Sustainable Development under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.

Mr. Tran Duy Dong, Director General of Department for Economic Zones ManagementIn recent years, Vietnam has achieved remarkable achievements in development process, which improved living standard of people and reduced poverty rate in the country. Over this period, there were 300 industrial parks established, of which more than 220 industrial parks operating in all three focal economic zones in Northern, Central and Southern Vietnam. Industrial parks have made a very effective contribution in attracting FDI, accounting for a large share in total industrial production of the country, and creating jobs for the market. The rapid development of industrial production and industrial zones requires a new model for industrial parks which comply advanced standards on greenhouse gas emissions, waste treatment and “green” space, recycle technology and energy efficiency. EIP, hence, is a right direction towards a sustainable development.
Opening the training course, Mr.Bui Nguyen Khanh emphasized the important role of education and training in the successful implementation and application of the model of Eco- Industrial Parks in Vietnam; to further intensify the training and transfer of knowledge related to Eco- Industrial Zones in the next time. Mr.Khanh hoped that through this training course, trainees would gain knowledge about sustainable development, management and use of resources, energy saving, management model of Industrial Zones effectively, ensuring social aspects in the development of industrial zones.
The training included 1 theory day and 1 field survey day in a pilot industrial park within the framework of the project “Implementation of Eco – industrial park initiative for sustainable industrial zones in Vietnam”.

After the presentation of the speakers, a group discussion on the theoretical issues related to the six contents presented above. Participants were divided into 3 groups to present aspects of management, infrastructure and services of eco-industrial zones; social responsibility, labor safety in eco- industrial zones; common resource efficiency and exchange of water resources and waste heat in eco-industrial zones.

II.Practical: (took place on April 24, 2018 in Hai Phong) – 2 contents

In the practical part of the program, The trainees were surveyed in Hai Phong and had a meeting with leaders of Dinh Vu Industrial Zone JSC to discuss the situation of developing industrial zones in the province and orientation for sustainable industrial development in the future; infrastructure survey – transportation connection and wastewater treatment issues in Dinh Vu Industrial Park. Over the course of the two-day training, trainees will effectively apply their knowledge into practice as well as professional work, this will contribute to Vietnam’s sustainable growth and development goals in the future.
