Study Tour to Japan and China

From July 2nd to July 9th 2017 a study tour to Japan and China consisting of provincial government level and Industrial Zone authorities was organized by the UNIDO Project “Implementation of eco-industrial park initiative for sustainable industrial zones in Vietnam”, funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and Switzerland State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The objective of the study tour is to strengthen the institutional capacities on eco-industrial park planning and management as well as learn about institutional and policy requirements.

In Japan, participants visited the eco-towns Kitakyushu in Fukuoka and Kawasaki in Tokyo. Best practice examples were exchanged in terms of zero emission policy and renewable energy installations covering 22 per cent of the city’s total power demand. In China, participants visited the following three cities as Yixing, Tianjin and Beijing and studied the development of an eco-industrial park which specializes in environmental protection technology such as industrial wastewater treatment, solid waste treatment, rural discharge water, air and noise pollution etc.

During the study tour, participants have been provided with definitions, concepts, benefit and methodology of eco-industrial parks and eco-towns and thus have been well-equipped with a better understanding of how existing industrial parks can be transferred to eco-industrial parks.
