Within the framework of the project “Implementation of Eco–industrial park initiative for sustainable industrial zone in Vietnam” funded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, Switzerland (SECO), three consultative meetings “Assessment of stakeholder awareness on environmental, economic, social, and community at eco-industrial parks” were held in Can Tho (2/8), Ninh Binh (18/8) and Da Nang (24/8).
The meetings were held successfully with the participation of more than 60 people in each province including internal stakeholders (Industrial Park (IP)’s Management Board, service companies, companies active inside the IPs, and department representatives from Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Industry and Trade, Department of Construction, Department of Science and Technology) as well as community representatives consisting of local administrations, local businesses, residents living near the IPs.

At the meetings, reports on the survey results of the Community Screening Assessment (CSA) were presented. The survey was conducted in three piloting IPs, which are Khanh Phu (Ninh Binh), Hoa Khanh (Da Nang) and Tra Noc 1&2 (Can Tho) from April to June 2016. The purpose of the survey is to understand the awareness, perceptions, knowledge and current practices on the environmental impacts, labor practice, community involvement, and transparency in sharing information and gender inequality in the aforementioned IPs, which achieves the highest level of participation and coverage of stakeholders. The scope of the screened areas/issues is recommended to follow the relevant core subjects and issues of the ISO26000, which was officially approved and translated in late 2013 (see Decision No. 2699/QD-BKHCN dated 30 August 2013 by Ministry of Science and Technology).

At the meeting, the committees and advisory group have received many comments from stakeholders on the CSA survey results to identify priority issues ands suggest practical approaches to improve social aspects in IPs so as to meet criteria of eco-industrial park proposed and technically assisted by UNIDO. The results of the meetings identified perceptions and expectations of the stakeholders to launch a program to raise awareness and an action plan for the sustainable development of IPs based on community. /.
